Aromatherapy Oils

Aromatherapy oils have been around thousands of years, it was well known in ancient cultures that the oils could be used to do heal, relax and create a pleasant atmosphere. Tinctures and teas were used by these cultures for healing and the oils were used for massage and healing of wounds. The word aromatherapy was not used for those practices however until the 1920's when a French chemist by the name of Rene Maurice Gattefosse became fascinated by the use of these oils in healing. Aromatherapy is the use of natural essential oils from plants, shrubs and trees; there are hundreds of different types of essential oils and dozens of different uses for them. Aromatherapy oils are made by extracting the oils from the plants by a process of distillation. The resulting oils are 100% pure and contain no manmade chemicals or additives. Aromatherapy oils are used in a variety of ways; you can use oil on the skin to encourage healing or as an anti bacterial or anti fungal.

Aromatherapy oils can penetrate the skin and soothe sore muscles or inflammation in the joints. Massages using aromatherapy oils is becoming popular again because of how effective it is at helping muscles relax and aiding healing. Aromatherapy oils also work well by using the aroma to help relax the mind; research has been done on how the use of such oils can add in the reduction of stress, depression and fatigue. Aromatherapy oils can be applied directly to the skin in the form of massage, as part of a compress, in a bath, or in an oil burner that is made specifically for the purpose of burning aromatherapy oils. When Aromatherapy oils are used for massage they need to be put in a carrier oils such as vitamin E oil, almond oil or grape seed oil. This holds and distributes the oil properly so that it can be absorbed by the skin. Aromatherapy oils are particularly good at soothing, lavender, one of the most popular oils is used in baths, in massage oil, and in burners to help with relaxation.

Oils such as Eucalyptus and tea tree are used for colds and to clean congestion. Peppermint oil works well for inflammation in the joints or back, as well as for congestion. Lavender and tea tree both contain healing properties and are excellent for skin problems, insect bites and burns. Tea tree oil is also an anti fungal and has been said to work well on toenail fungus. You can add your own essential oils to your massage oils, by purchasing a base oil and then adding a small amount of essential oils to it. If you wish to purchase products with aromatherapy oils look around to find products that contain pure essential oils and do not have a large amount of chemicals and additives. Often times manufacturers will advertise their products as having aromatherapy benefits and have little or any of the essential oil in them.
